Brussels City Guide

A Brussels city guide wouldn't be complete without first mentioning the array of restaurants available, as it enjoys some of the best food in Europe. The selection is wide, with many nationalities represented and thriving here. Traditionally, Belgians eat seasonally, thus enjoying for example, game in the autumn and fresh salads in the spring. Meat and seafood are especially popular, with the local dishes incorporated. Usually when eating out it is better value to pick the menu of the day rather than to pick and choose à la Carte. Chips are popular as a snack, especially when smothered in mayonnaise and/or served with mussels. In Ilôt Sacré, on Rue des Bouchers you will find yourself inundated with restaurants serving seafood.

About Brussels
Brussels Photo

Brussels has enough bars and cafés to keep anyone busy day and night, and along with an inundated number of places to try out a new beer or chocolate, this city also has many concert halls offering a wide range of theatrical and musical performances. For Rock concerts go to the Forest National or the Ancienne Belgique while Jazz is particularly good in L'Archiduc and the Sounds Jazz Club.
In Palais des Beaux-Arts and the Conservatoire Royal de Musique, classical music and opera lovers will find plenty to entertain them. To find out the listings for the various theatres, buy the Bulletin which has a entertainment guide and covers everything from music, theatre, dance, cinema, etc.

There are many interesting markets around Brussels, such as the bird market, horse market, flower market, antique market, etc. Here are some of the locations: The antiques market takes place every weekend Saturday 09:00-15:00h and Sunday 09:00-13:00h on Place du Grand Sablon. The daily flower market is held every day except Monday and during the winter months, on the Grand Place / Grote Markt. On Wednesdays in the afternoon, there is a fresh produce market in Place Châtelain / Kasteleinsplein, while on Sundays at Gare du Midi there is the Marche du Midi, an exotic market with foods, spices and plants. A bird Market takes place every Sunday from 07:00.14:00h by Grand Place.

The EU district, to the east of the city, isn't as picturesque as the centre. The area is mainly made up to government buildings and offices but there are some interesting sights such as the Art Nouveau houses and many museums like the Musée des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique (Natural Science Museum), Musée Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire (Royal Art and History Museum) and the Musée Royale de l'Armée et d'Histoire Militaire (Royal Museum of Army and Military History).

There are also a number of parks to visit while here, if you seek a bit of relaxation time. Place du Petit Sablon, above Place du Grand Sablon, is a pretty little garden. Inside, there are 48 bronze statues and a monument to Count Egmont and Hoorn. Bois de la camber, on the other hand, is a larger park. It has an artificial lake and during the summer on Sundays, there are free classical music concerts.
