Brussels City Break

A Brussels city break will probably feature at least one of a few things; beer tasting, chocolate buying and sight-seeing. The pleasures of this city can be explored with ease, following the example of the laid back locals, with its joys sometimes found in the most unexpected places.

About Brussels
Beer lovers from around the world flock to sample sone of the 800 types of beers brewed here. Most cafés will have a selection of about 20, with specialist bars having a few hundred. It is usually considered better to sample one type of beer an evening otherwise your headache the next morning will make you regret it! There are a few brewery's open to the public, such as the Cantillon Brewary and the Brewary Museum, where you can learn a bit of history about Belgian beers. Bars worth a visit are La Mort Subite (Warmoesberg/Montagne Aux Herbes Potagères), Het Bier circus (89 rue de l'Enseignement) and Moeder Lambic (R. de Savoie 68).

Belgian Chocolate is renowned for its rich flavour and filled chocolates such as Pralines. The selection is rather like the beer, staggering! The best chocolatiers make their own mould and each praline is made by hand. A good place to sample different chocolate is in the Planéte Chocolat (Rue du Lombard 24) and there are many Chocolate shops near Place du Grand Sablon, as well as Godiva and Neuhaus Chocolate shops near Grand Place. There is also a chocolate museum Musée du Cacao et du Chocolat in Grand Place, where you can learn the background to all things chocolaty.

Due to Brussels' rather compact city centre, the attractions are easily reached and especially so in the Lower Town where most places are within walking distance of each other. The Grand Place, the centre of the Lower Town, is an architectural must see, with the country's finest Baroque guildhalls, the marvellous Gothic Hôtel de Ville and the many cafés and restaurants. Also near this great square is the famous Manneken Pis, on the corner of Rue de l'Étuve and Rue du Chêne, while a similar female version of the statue, Jeanneke pis, can be found a few streets away on the Impasse de la Fidélité. Other places worth a visit are the Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée, which shows the country's comic-strip culture, and the Bourse (in Place de la Bourse), a neoclassical structure built in 1873, on which one of its statues is by Rodin.
